If they land adjacent to at least two other hearts, they become "locked" and your spins are reset to their starting number. This continues until you don't land bonus symbols adjacent to at least two other bonus symbols or you Fill the Screen, at which point 2x your total bet is added to each heart. After each "lock" that occurs where your spins reset, the value of each heart also increases by your total bet, so ideally, you'd just land one heart on each spin adjacent to your initial locking set, for maximum return.
