The slot machine industry is trying out Skill-based games in an attempt to attract younger players. The problem with most of the current batch of Skill-based games is that they miss the mark. And, the younger players aren't attracted to themes and games that seem aimed at older players. There is a second problem. The controls used for the Skill-based games are poorly designed. Problems include 1) they don't match the game's natural type of control (joy sticks instead of track balls, flipper buttons on top instead of on the side, lack of Nintendo/PlayStation style controls), 2) responsiveness lag (the game's response to your actions seem sluggish), 3) you need two hands. Not all Skill-based games are doomed to failure. There are some that will be coming out that are taking a much fresher approach.
